When I was a kid, we always bought Country Time lemonade mix in the summer. The thought of making lemonade ourselves, using real lemons, never really crossed our minds. Why go through all that trouble when you could just scoop some powder out of the canister, mix it with water and be done?
Well, I finally made my first batch of real lemonade the other day, and you know what? It was harder than using a mix. But it wasn’t that much harder. Sure, I had to cut and squeeze the lemons, and I even made a simple syrup to sweeten it. But it was worth the extra effort, because the lemonade tasted so good.
That’s the big thing I’ve noticed as I’ve started doing all of this cooking and baking from scratch. It does takes a little more effort, but at the end of the process, you still have the same number of pots and pans to clean up. So why not eat real food instead of using a mix?
(If you’re interested in the recipe, it’s two parts water for one part fresh-squeezed lemon juice, with ginger and simple syrup to taste…)
